Ukraine’s international partners will work to strengthen a proposed US plan to end the war with Russia when leaders gather for the G20 summit in South Africa. The meeting comes as President Volodymyr Zelensky warns that Ukraine is facing one of the most difficult moments in its history due to growing pressure to accept terms seen as favourable to Moscow.
The leaked draft plan includes conditions Kyiv had previously rejected, such as ceding eastern territories and reducing the size of its military. It also calls for Ukraine to pledge not to join NATO, a long-standing demand from the Kremlin. The proposal has raised concerns in Europe, with some officials calling it a potentially dangerous step.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, after speaking with Zelensky and leaders from France and Germany, said allies remain committed to securing a lasting peace. He added that the G20 discussions would focus on improving the plan in support of ongoing US-led efforts.
Zelensky has responded cautiously, noting that Ukraine will work with partners and offer alternatives. He acknowledged the difficult balance between protecting national dignity and maintaining essential international support.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said the proposal could serve as a basis for talks, although no detailed negotiations have begun.
