Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the Beating Retreat ceremony on January 29, 2026, marking the formal end of India’s Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi.

The Beating Retreat ceremony is held each year at Vijay Chowk and signals the conclusion of the Republic Day festivities. It is rooted in military tradition and features coordinated performances by bands from the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force and Central Armed Police Forces. These performances include patriotic and classical compositions, ceremonial drills and disciplined marching that reflect the organisation and ethos of the armed forces.

At the event, Prime Minister Modi highlighted how the ceremony reflects India’s rich military heritage and traditions, noting that it symbolises the discipline, valour and dedication of the nation’s defence services. He expressed pride in the armed forces, noting their continued commitment to safeguarding the country.

The 2026 ceremony also celebrated themes such as the sesquicentennial of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ and included musical pieces like ‘Kadam Kadam Badhaye Ja’, ‘Vijay Bharat’ and others performed by the military bands. Dignitaries present included the President of India, the Vice-President, Defence Minister and senior military leaders.

The event combines music, precision and ceremonial pageantry to honour India’s defence traditions and formally draw to a close the 77th Republic Day observances.
