Bangladesh’s national election has delivered a clear result, with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party securing enough seats to form a majority in parliament, according to early reports.

The BNP crossed the threshold of 151 seats in the 300-member parliament, allowing it to claim victory and move toward forming the next government. The election marks the first national vote since months of protests in 2024 led to the removal of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and the installation of an interim administration.

Polling took place amid high security, with police, army, and paramilitary forces deployed across the country. Local media reported voter turnout exceeding 60 percent, significantly higher than participation in the previous election. There were no reports of widespread violence during voting or counting.

The contest was primarily between the BNP and the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami. Hasina’s Awami League was barred from participating, leaving many long-time supporters without their traditional party on the ballot. Surveys indicated that a large share of former Awami League voters shifted support to the BNP, while some chose to abstain.

BNP leader Tarique Rahman, who returned to the country in late 2025 after years in exile, contested two seats and was declared the winner in both by his party. Under election rules, he will be required to retain one seat and vacate the other, triggering a by-election.

The election was held alongside a national referendum on reforms to state institutions. Officials said final certified results would be announced after counting is completed, but trends suggest a stable majority for the BNP.
