Two bodies have been recovered in the Eryri mountain range following an extensive search for two missing young men, police in north Wales confirmed.

Concern was raised on Wednesday over the welfare of the men, aged 19 and 20, after they failed to return. A coordinated search operation was launched in full winter conditions across difficult mountain terrain. North Wales Police said the bodies were located and recovered during these efforts, and that both men have now been formally identified. Their families have been informed.

The operation involved multiple specialist rescue services, including the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, Aberglaslyn Mountain Rescue Team, RAF Mountain Rescue Service, SARDA and HM Coastguard. Teams searched areas around Yr Wyddfa, working through snow and ice and continuing overnight despite challenging weather.

Jurgen Dissmann, chair of the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, said volunteers carried out long hours of searching in severe conditions in an effort to locate the pair as quickly as possible. He extended condolences to the families and loved ones, adding that all those involved were deeply saddened by the outcome despite sustained efforts.

In a separate incident, police in Scotland are searching for a missing climber on Ben Nevis. Brian McGillicuddy, 64, was reported missing after failing to return from a planned hike and was last seen in Fort William. Police said inquiries are ongoing.
