Australian authorities have arrested Naveed Akram, the surviving suspect in the deadly Bondi Beach terror attack, after he emerged from a coma in hospital. Akram, 25, was taken into custody at his bedside once doctors confirmed he was mentally oriented and able to understand legal procedures. Police waited for the effects of medication to subside before formally arresting and cautioning him.

Akram has been charged with 59 offences, including one count of committing a terrorist act, 15 counts of murder, 40 counts of attempted murder through wounding, and charges related to planting an explosive device, firing a weapon with intent to cause serious harm, and publicly displaying a terrorist symbol.

The attack took place on Sunday at a Jewish Hanukkah gathering at Sydney’s Bondi Beach. Akram and his father, Sajid Akram, opened fire on the crowd, killing 15 people and injuring at least 40 others. Victims ranged in age from 10 to 87 years. Sajid Akram, 50, was killed during police counterfire, while Naveed was critically injured.

Investigators are examining the background of the attackers, including their recent travel to the Philippines. Authorities have stated that there is no known link between the radicalisation of the suspects and any influence from India.
