Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been diagnosed with an early stage of skin cancer, just days after being convicted of attempting to orchestrate a coup against the government. Medical examinations conducted this week revealed that two skin lesions removed from Bolsonaro tested positive for squamous cell carcinoma, a common but potentially serious form of skin cancer.

“Two of the lesions tested positive for squamous cell carcinoma, which is neither the kindest nor the most aggressive, but it is still a skin cancer,” said Dr. Claudio Biroloni, one of Bolsonaro’s physicians, according to CNN Brasil.

The 70-year-old former president underwent tests at a hospital in Brasília on Sunday, with results confirmed on Wednesday. The diagnosis adds a new layer of complexity to Bolsonaro’s legal and personal challenges.

Just a few days prior, Bolsonaro was sentenced to more than 27 years in prison after being found guilty of plotting a coup d’état. Prosecutors alleged the plan included discussions of potentially assassinating current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro, who denies the charges, remains under house arrest and is expected to appeal the ruling.

His legal team has not commented on whether the cancer diagnosis will affect his detention or upcoming appeal process.
