Canada will restart trade negotiations with the United States only when the timing is considered appropriate, Prime Minister Mark Carney said. He explained that there is currently no urgent matter requiring discussion with President Donald Trump.

Trade talks were paused last month after the Ontario government released an advertisement criticizing U.S. tariffs, which led to a halt in negotiations. Carney emphasized that Canada is focusing on planning for the future and building new international partnerships.

While discussions with the U.S. may resume in the next couple of weeks, Carney stressed that talks will happen only when it makes sense for both countries. He added that Canada remains open to dialogue but does not have a pressing issue to address at the moment.

A key focus of the upcoming negotiations will be reducing U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminium, and automobiles, which were introduced under the Trump administration. Carney’s comments suggest a measured and strategic approach, prioritizing Canada’s long-term interests while remaining prepared to engage with the U.S. when conditions are favorable.
