At least eight people were killed and 18 others injured after an explosion struck a mosque in Syria’s Homs city on Friday, according to state media reports. The blast occurred at the Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque in the Wadi al-Dahab district, an area largely inhabited by members of the Alawite community. The explosion took place while worshippers were gathered for Friday prayers.
Syrian security forces quickly sealed off the area following the incident and transported the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities described the incident as a terrorist explosion and said the attack directly targeted civilians inside the mosque. Initial findings from investigators indicated that explosive devices had been planted within the building prior to the blast.
The interior ministry stated that investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for the attack. Local media reported that security units were deployed in and around the site to maintain order and support emergency response efforts.
Syria’s foreign ministry strongly condemned the explosion, calling it an attack on basic human and moral values and an attempt to destabilize the country. Residents in the area reported hearing a loud explosion followed by widespread panic and confusion throughout the neighborhood as people rushed to safety.
