The death toll from an airstrike on a drug treatment hospital in Kabul has risen to 400, according to Afghanistan’s deputy government spokesman.
Hamdullah Fitrat said early Tuesday that the strike, which occurred late Monday night, destroyed major sections of the hospital building. The facility was known for treating people suffering from drug addiction. Authorities reported that at least 250 people were also injured in the attack. Rescue teams continued working at the site as firefighters attempted to bring the blaze under control and search for bodies trapped under the debris.
Earlier on Monday, Afghanistan’s Health Ministry spokesman Sharafat Zaman had said that more than 200 people were killed in the strike. During a televised interview, he stated that the entire structure of the treatment center had been severely damaged and that the building’s different sections had collapsed following the attack.
Afghanistan’s government accused Pakistan’s military of carrying out the airstrike on the hospital in Kabul as part of a series of strikes conducted in the country. According to Afghan officials, the attack specifically targeted the facility where drug users were undergoing treatment.
Pakistan rejected the allegation and said that its operations in Kabul and eastern Afghanistan did not strike any civilian locations. The country maintained that the strikes were directed elsewhere and did not involve hospitals or other civilian facilities.
Emergency crews remained at the scene as efforts continued to extinguish remaining fires and recover victims from the rubble.
