Dharmendra, one of Indian cinema’s most admired icons, passed away at the age of 89, leaving behind a film legacy that stretched across more than six decades. He died on 24 November 2025, surrounded by family members, marking the end of an era cherished by generations of Hindi film viewers.

Born in 1935 in a small village near Ludhiana, he grew up far from the world of films. His journey changed course when he won a talent competition that brought him to Bombay, where he began his struggle for a break in cinema. His early years were marked by determination and financial hardship, but his commitment soon paid off. After his debut in 1960, he gained recognition for his performance in a 1963 drama that revealed his emotional depth.

By the mid-1960s, Dharmendra had become a leading star. His roles in action, romance, and comedy earned him unmatched popularity. His 1975 portrayal of Veeru in one of India’s biggest blockbusters cemented him as a cultural figure whose dialogues and humour became part of everyday life. Alongside his successful career, his partnership with Hema Malini created one of the most memorable love stories in the industry.

Dharmendra acted in over 300 films, earned prestigious honours, and remained admired for his simplicity and warmth. Even as age and illness slowed him down, he continued to connect with fans through his poetry, public appearances, and later film roles. His passing has prompted widespread tributes, with colleagues and admirers remembering him as a symbol of strength, humility, and affection.
