The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued a statement confirming that a sniper on a nearby rooftop opened fire on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office in Dallas, Texas. The attacker indiscriminately shot at the building and a van located in the sally port. Three detainees were struck by gunfire: one was killed, and the other two remain in critical condition. The shooter was later discovered deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Shell casings recovered at the scene bore anti-ICE messages, leading DHS to characterize the assault as one motivated by hate toward ICE. In her remarks, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem condemned the rhetoric comparing ICE to historical oppressive regimes, warning such language has real consequences. DHS also noted that this was not the facility’s first security incident — just last month, staff responded to a bomb threat made by an individual claiming to have a device in his backpack.
The agency reaffirmed that ICE agents are public servants committed to public safety, and emphasized that violence and dehumanization directed at them must stop.
