Elon Musk laid out a striking vision of the future at the U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum, saying that advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics could make money “irrelevant” and work merely optional. According to him, within the next 10 to 20 years, humanoid robots could handle the bulk of labor, freeing people to choose how and whether they work.
Musk compared future work to hobbies like gardening or playing video games—activities people pursue out of passion, not necessity. In this future, robots will lower the cost of essential goods and services, potentially eliminating poverty, he said. The idea is rooted in his belief that AI and robotics offer a path to abundance, not scarcity.
He referenced his ventures—such as xAI, Tesla Bot, and space-based solar power—as building blocks for this transformation. While he acknowledged challenges ahead, Musk remained optimistic, pointing to a long-term shift in how society functions once machines become highly efficient and widespread.
