European leaders have pledged a coordinated response after U.S. President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on eight European allies over their military presence in Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark. The decision follows recent joint military exercises in the Arctic region, where small contingents of troops were deployed by Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland.
President Trump said he would impose a 10% tariff on imports from these countries, adding to existing trade duties already in place. The announcement comes amid renewed statements by Trump expressing his intent to annex Greenland, a move that has raised diplomatic tensions across Europe.
In response, the eight countries issued a joint statement expressing full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland. They stressed that the military exercise, conducted under Danish coordination with allied participation, was focused on strengthening Arctic security and posed no threat.
The statement also warned that tariff threats could weaken transatlantic relations and trigger further escalation. As members of NATO, the countries reaffirmed their commitment to shared security interests and the protection of sovereignty. The dispute has also cast uncertainty over recent trade agreements between the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union.
