EVA Air, a Taiwanese airline, has issued an apology following public outcry over a request for sick leave documentation sent to the phone of a deceased flight attendant. The incident involves 34-year-old flight attendant Sun, who died on October 10 after a sudden illness that began during a flight from Milan to Taoyuan, Taiwan.
Sun first felt unwell on September 24 during the long-haul flight. After landing, she sought treatment at a local clinic, but her condition worsened, leading to hospital admissions on September 26 and again on October 8. She passed away two days later.
In a troubling follow-up, a representative from EVA Air reportedly contacted Sun’s phone shortly after her death, requesting proof of her sick leave application. The family was compelled to respond by sending a copy of her death certificate.
In response to the backlash, EVA Air expressed deep sorrow over Sun’s passing and extended sincere apologies to her family. The airline clarified that the request came from an employee “insufficiently familiar with their work duties,” promising to review internal procedures to prevent similar incidents.
