Authorities in Paraguay announced the arrest of former Mexican police chief Hernan Bermudez, who is accused of heading the criminal network La Barredora. The operation, carried out jointly with Mexican officials, took place in Asuncion on Saturday, September 13.

Video released by Paraguay’s National Anti-Drug Secretariat (SENAD) shows security forces entering a two-story residence and detaining a long-haired man forced to the ground. Additional images depict the suspect, believed to be Bermudez, seated calmly on a sofa following the raid.

Bermudez, known by the nickname “El Abuelo,” has been wanted in Mexico on charges that include kidnapping, extortion, and organized crime. He previously led the police force in Tabasco state between 2018 and 2024, during the tenure of Adan Lopez, a senior figure in the Morena ruling party.

Officials described the capture as a coordinated success against organized crime with potential international implications. While news agencies confirmed the location of the raid through structural and satellite comparisons, the exact date of the video could not be independently authenticated.

Mexican prosecutors are now expected to request Bermudez’s extradition to face justice at home.
