A former aide to German far-right lawmaker Maximilian Krah has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison for spying on behalf of China. Jian Guo was handed a four-year and nine-month jail term by a court in Dresden on Tuesday after being found guilty of acting as an agent for a Chinese intelligence service.
Guo worked for Krah, a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) representing the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which is known for its nationalist and far-right positions. The court ruled that during his employment, Guo covertly gathered and transmitted sensitive information to Chinese intelligence, breaching trust and national security.
This conviction adds to growing concerns in Europe about espionage activities conducted by foreign powers, particularly China, targeting political figures and institutions. The case highlights the risks posed by foreign infiltration within European political circles.
Maximilian Krah has publicly condemned the actions of his former aide, emphasizing that he was unaware of any espionage activities.
The sentence reflects Germany’s firm stance against espionage and its commitment to safeguarding national and European Union security interests. The court’s decision sends a strong message about the seriousness with which such cases are treated in Germany.
