A senior cultural figure in France has resigned from a key institutional role following the emergence of past correspondence and the opening of a financial investigation.
Jack Lang, a former French culture minister, has resigned as president of the Arab World Institute. The decision was confirmed by the French Foreign Affairs Ministry after documents revealed his past correspondence with financier Jeffrey Epstein. These exchanges reportedly took place intermittently between 2012 and 2019.
Earlier the same day, France’s financial prosecutor opened an investigation into Lang and his daughter, Caroline Lang, on suspicion of aggravated tax fraud laundering. Authorities have confirmed the investigation but have not released further details. The inquiry followed the release of official documents that showed repeated communication and financial links between Lang and Epstein.
Lang had been scheduled to report to the Foreign Ministry, which oversees the Arab World Institute, a cultural and research body focused on promoting understanding of the Arab world. As public attention increased, calls for his resignation intensified.
Responding to the developments, Lang denied any wrongdoing and stated that he welcomed the investigation. He said the allegations against him were unfounded and that he would cooperate fully to clarify the situation. His legal representative also said there was no evidence of illegal financial activity, while acknowledging that authorities had the right to verify the matter.
The released documents have drawn wider attention to Epstein’s connections with prominent public figures across several countries. Separately, Caroline Lang resigned from her leadership role in a professional media organization after her own links to Epstein were revealed. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
