Ukraine and France have announced a major defense agreement that will see Kyiv receive up to 100 Rafale F4 fighter jets along with advanced air-defense systems. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron signed the letter of intent at an air base near Paris, calling the decision a significant step in strengthening Ukraine’s air-defense capabilities.
Deliveries of the Rafale F4 jets are expected to be completed by 2035, while joint production of interceptor drones is set to begin this year. Ukraine will also receive strong radar systems, eight air-defense units and additional advanced weaponry. Financial arrangements for the deal are still being negotiated, with France aiming to seek EU support and explore the use of frozen Russian assets, an issue that remains divisive among EU members.

The agreement is expected to last 10 years starting next year. As Russia intensifies missile and drone attacks on energy facilities and infrastructure, Ukrainian officials say the French systems will play a key role in protecting civilians and critical sites. Analysts note that the long-term impact will depend on training, logistics and the availability of missiles for the Rafales.
Zelensky will continue his European tour, seeking further support from partner nations.
