Germany will permanently deploy a brigade in Lithuania, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Lieutenant General Alexus Grynkewich, announced during a press conference in Vilnius on Thursday, September 11. The move is part of NATO’s broader effort to strengthen deterrence and defense capabilities on its eastern flank.

Grynkewich emphasized that this permanent deployment represents a significant commitment to regional security. Additionally, NATO’s Allied Air Command will enhance support to Lithuania’s control and reporting center, improving early warning capabilities for potential aerial threats — particularly those related to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The announcement follows heightened regional tensions after a Russian drone entered Polish airspace on Wednesday, September 10. In a joint statement, Poland, Lithuania, and Ukraine condemned the incursion as a “deliberate and unprecedented provocation.” While Russia denied targeting Poland, saying it would not comment further, NATO officials are still assessing whether the incursion was intentional.

The incident has intensified scrutiny of NATO’s drone defense readiness and prompted calls among Western leaders for increased sanctions on Russia. It also casts renewed doubt on Moscow’s commitment to de-escalation in Ukraine, as the alliance bolsters its posture in Eastern Europe.
