India has introduced a revised national seismic map that places the entire Himalayan arc in the highest earthquake risk category. The update comes as part of the country’s new Earthquake Design Code, which aims to create a more accurate picture of seismic vulnerability based on scientific and geological data.
The new classification, known as Zone VI, covers the full stretch of the Himalayas, including regions that have long been considered highly active due to tectonic movement. Experts note that several fault lines across the central Himalayas have not experienced major ruptures for nearly two centuries, increasing concern over potential high-magnitude events.
According to the updated assessment, around 61 percent of India now falls under moderate to very high seismic risk zones. The map moves away from state-based divisions and instead focuses on geological structures, resulting in new areas being categorised as higher risk than before.
The changes are expected to significantly influence future infrastructure planning, construction standards and disaster preparedness measures. States across northern India, particularly those in and around the Himalayan foothills, may need to adopt stricter building norms to reduce potential damage during major earthquakes. Authorities say the updated map is meant to guide long-term safety planning for communities living in sensitive zones.
