The House Oversight Committee is preparing to move forward with contempt of Congress proceedings against former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton, according to committee chair James Comer. The action follows Hillary Clinton and former president Bill Clinton’s refusal to comply with subpoenas seeking testimony related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The subpoenas required the Clintons to appear before the committee to answer questions about Epstein, who died in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges. After the deadline for Hillary Clinton’s testimony passed, Comer said both Clintons had defied a lawful and bipartisan congressional order. He stated that the committee would pursue criminal contempt proceedings against them.

The committee is expected to consider a contempt resolution next week. If approved by the panel and the full House of Representatives, the matter would be referred to the justice department, which would then decide whether to seek an indictment.

The Clintons’ legal team has argued that the subpoenas are invalid and lack a legitimate legislative purpose. Both have denied any knowledge of Epstein’s crimes and said they were not involved in investigations related to him.

Democratic aides have criticized the committee’s focus on Hillary Clinton, raising concerns about selective enforcement. The subpoenas were issued last year along with requests to several former top law enforcement officials as part of a broader congressional inquiry into the Epstein case.
