The tragic plane crash on January 28, 2025, which claimed the lives of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Ajit Pawar and four others, has been marred by insensitive gender-based trolling. Among the victims was co-pilot Shambhavi Pathak, who has faced cruel remarks simply because of her gender.

Following the crash, which occurred during an attempted landing in Baramati, some online trolls began making regressive comments mocking Pathak for being a woman pilot. Disturbingly, several of these comments focused solely on her gender, with remarks like “women belong in the kitchen” and “employing women in male-dominated jobs is suicidal.” These hurtful comments sparked outrage online, drawing attention to the sexism women face in male-dominated professions, especially aviation.

In a contrasting turn, an old tweet by Ajit Pawar resurfaced. The tweet, posted in 2024, highlighted his support for women’s empowerment, stating, “When we travel by helicopter or plane, if our plane or helicopter lands smoothly, we understand that the pilot is a woman.” This tweet now stands in stark contrast to the harmful remarks made about Pathak, reinforcing the ongoing struggle against gender bias.

This tragic incident brings to the forefront the urgent need for change in how gender is viewed, particularly in the workplace.
