Iran confirmed on Monday that Alireza Tangsiri, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, died from injuries he sustained in an Israeli airstrike, days after Israel claimed responsibility for the strike.
The IRGC released a statement through its Sepah News outlet saying Tangsiri “succumbed to severe injuries” from the attack. Iran’s delayed confirmation follows Israel’s earlier assertion that it targeted and killed him in a strike. The gap between the strike and the official acknowledgement signals the sensitivity of the loss for Tehran’s military establishment.
Tangsiri served as commander of the IRGC Navy since 2018 and played a role in Iran’s military strategy across the Persian Gulf. He oversaw naval operations in the Strait of Hormuz and the development of tactics involving speed boats, drones and anti-ship systems. The IRGC Navy holds responsibility for securing Iran’s southern waters and monitoring shipping routes through one of the world’s most critical oil transit corridors.
His death marks one of the most significant losses Iran has confirmed since the conflict with Israel and the United States escalated in late February 2026. Israel has conducted a series of strikes on Iranian military figures and infrastructure, with Tehran responding through missile and drone attacks on Israeli and Gulf targets.
Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf dismissed ongoing diplomatic talks as a cover and said Iranian forces stand ready to confront U.S. troops on the ground. His statement came after reports confirmed the arrival of 2,500 U.S. Marines in the region. The situation signals that both military and diplomatic tracks remain in motion simultaneously, with no resolution in sight.
