Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has acknowledged the deaths of thousands of people in the ongoing anti-government protests, which have persisted for over two weeks. In a speech on Thursday, Khamenei admitted that some of the deaths were “inhuman” and “savage,” though he placed the blame for the unrest squarely on the United States, accusing President Donald Trump of supporting the protesters. Khamenei called for the harsh punishment of those involved in the protests and referred to them as “seditionists.”

As part of the government’s narrative, Iranian authorities released footage showing armed individuals mingling with regular protesters, claiming that these were foreign saboteurs. Meanwhile, a senior Iranian cleric, Ahmad Khatami, called for the execution of protesters, labeling them as “hypocrites” and accusing them of being agents of Israel and the U.S.

Despite Khamenei’s statements, President Trump portrayed the situation differently, indicating a postponement of military action and thanking Tehran for reportedly executing 800 protesters, though this figure remains unverified.

Human rights groups report over 3,090 deaths and more than 22,100 arrests during the protests, which started on December 28 in response to a devaluation of Iran’s currency. The ongoing unrest has led to mass repression and significant damage to public property.
