North Korean leader Kim Jong Un declared during a session of the Supreme People’s Assembly that his country will not give up its nuclear arsenal and no longer considers the concept of denuclearisation valid, state media KCNA reported on Monday.
Kim stated that sanctions imposed by Western nations “only allow us more time,” and reaffirmed that North Korea would “never give up nuclear force.” He said the country sees no reason to sit down with the United States unless Washington abandons its insistence on denuclearisation.
Relations with South Korea were also addressed. Kim asserted that North Korea has “no intentions to unite with South Korea” and that his government would “never sit down” for talks with Seoul.
Despite the rejection of talks, Kim made a rare reference to former U.S. President Donald Trump, saying he still holds “good memories” of their meetings. Trump and Kim held three summits between 2018 and 2019, though negotiations eventually collapsed without an agreement.
The announcements underscore North Korea’s entrenched position on its nuclear program and its growing isolation amid international sanctions and stalled diplomacy.
