In a tragic incident from Nanded district, Maharashtra, a young woman has performed a symbolic marriage with her dead boyfriend after he was allegedly murdered by her own family over caste differences. The victim, 20‑year‑old Saksham Tate, was beaten, shot and had his skull crushed by her father and brothers when they learnt the couple planned to marry.

His girlfriend, identified as 21‑year-old Aanchal, reached his home during the funeral rites. She applied turmeric on his body and vermillion on her forehead, declaring herself his wife and vowing to live in his house as a daughter-in-law. She said that although he was dead, their love remained alive, calling the act a final union and demanding the death penalty for the killers.

The couple had known each other for about three years, meeting through Aanchal’s brothers. Their relationship faced fierce opposition because of caste differences, but Aanchal stayed committed despite threats. Police have registered a murder case under relevant laws and arrested six accused including her father and brothers.

The woman’s dramatic protest has sparked widespread shock and highlighted the continuing realities of caste-based violence and honour killings in the region. Her act is being seen as a powerful if tragic statement against intolerance and forced social norms.
