At least five people were killed on Monday when a small aircraft operated by the Mexican Navy crashed near Galveston, off the Texas coast, according to officials. The plane was carrying a young medical patient along with seven other people when the incident occurred.
Mexico’s Navy said four people on board were Navy officers and four were civilians, including a child. Among the civilians were two members of the Michou and Mau Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps Mexican children suffering from severe burns. Authorities have not yet clarified which individuals were among those confirmed dead.
The crash happened Monday afternoon near the base of a causeway close to Galveston, an island city located about 50 miles southeast of Houston. The area is known as a popular beach destination. Emergency responders were quickly dispatched to the scene.
Mexico’s Navy stated that the aircraft was involved in a medical mission and described the incident as an accident. The Navy said it would investigate the cause and is cooperating with U.S. authorities during search and rescue efforts.
The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that teams from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board arrived at the site to gather information. Local law enforcement agencies, including dive and drone teams, also assisted in the response.
Weather conditions may be reviewed as part of the investigation, as fog and low visibility were reported in the area around the time of the crash.
