Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Friday that her government has proposed the creation of a high-level panel with China to address rising trade tensions after Beijing launched an investigation into Mexico’s tariff measures.

China’s probe, announced Thursday, targets recent restrictions imposed by Mexico on imports from countries without free trade agreements. Beijing argued that the measures could damage the interests of its trading partners and weaken investor confidence.

Mexico’s Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard met with China’s ambassador, Daojiang Chen, on Thursday to clarify the government’s position. According to the Economy Ministry, Ebrard stressed that the measures are based on Mexico’s national interests and are unrelated to outside pressure or geopolitical concerns.

The dispute reflects broader strains in global trade, drawing comparisons to the tariff confrontations between the United States and China in recent years. Mexico, a member of the USMCA alongside the U.S. and Canada, remains heavily reliant on trade with Washington but is seeking to manage its growing commercial ties with Beijing.

Sheinbaum said dialogue was the “most constructive path forward” and expressed hope that talks with China could ease tensions and prevent escalation.
