Michelle Obama has said that the United States has not yet created the conditions for a woman to win the presidency, citing recent election results as evidence. Speaking at an event while promoting her new book, she reflected on the unsuccessful presidential bids of Kamala Harris and Hillary Clinton and argued that deeper cultural issues continue to hold women back.
Obama said the country still has “a lot of growing up to do,” noting that many voters remain uncomfortable with the idea of being led by a woman. She added that leadership biases and long-standing attitudes continue to shape political outcomes.
Despite being one of the most influential figures in the Democratic Party, Obama has repeatedly rejected calls to run for president herself. She stated firmly in 2016 that she would not enter the race, and similar speculation reappeared during the 2024 election cycle, when Kamala Harris led the Democratic ticket following dissatisfaction with President Biden.
Obama campaigned for Harris, warning supporters about the stakes of the election. At a Michigan rally, she said that Donald Trump posed risks to women’s rights and urged voters not to “hand our fates over” to someone she argued does not represent women’s interests.
