Murmansk and Severomorsk, two cities in Russia’s Arctic region, have been without power for four days due to infrastructure failure. On Friday, five power transmission towers collapsed near Murmansk, causing widespread electricity disruption. The outage affected heating and water supplies in both cities. Though water and heat have largely been restored, power is still out as repairs face delays due to severe weather.
The region’s aging power grid has struggled with extreme weather, prompting Russia’s Investigative Committee to open a criminal case, alleging negligence in maintaining power lines. Murmansk, an industrial hub home to major companies like Norilsk Nickel and PhosAgro, continues to function without major disruptions to industrial operations.
The combined population of Murmansk and Severomorsk is around 300,000, though authorities have not disclosed how many remain without power. In response, regional officials have declared a state of emergency and warned of potential further outages as demand peaks when schools and workplaces reopen. Emergency aid, including food, water, and phone charging facilities, has been made available to residents. Public transport in both cities will remain free until power is fully restored.
