Elon Musk has argued that advances in artificial intelligence and robotics powered by capitalist systems could one day create the type of abundance that past communist visions imagined but were never able to achieve. Speaking about the future of automation, he said that large-scale prosperity is more likely to come from competitive innovation than from centrally controlled systems.
Musk noted that historical attempts at communism have resulted in widespread low income, with most people facing limited opportunities while small political elites lived comfortably. According to him, this pattern has repeated wherever the system has been tried. He suggested that a true environment of unlimited access to goods and services would require technological progress and economic incentives strong enough to support continuous development.
He added that the idea of a society where people have what they need without scarcity is most likely to emerge from rapid advancements in AI and robotics, which he believes are being driven primarily by capitalist frameworks. Musk described this outcome as an irony, suggesting that the path to a vision long associated with communism may come through market-based innovation.
