Overnight on 9-10 September 2025, Polish and NATO forces engaged Russian drones that trespassed into Polish airspace—marking the first time NATO has shot down enemy drones inside an allied country since the start of Moscow’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Poland reported 19 separate aerial incursions, some entering from Belarus, including several long-range drones that traveled deep into eastern Poland. Fighter jets from Poland, with support from NATO aircraft—such as Dutch F-35s—intercepted and shot down at least three drones, with a fourth likely destroyed.
One drone crashed into a residential building in Wyryki-Wola, eastern Poland, damaging the roof though causing no reported casualties. Debris from other drones was found further inside Polish territory, including in provinces far from the border.
In response, Poland triggered Article 4 of the NATO treaty, calling for consultations among members due to perceived threats to its security. Russian and Belarusian officials disputed that Russia carried out an attack on Poland, suggesting some drones may have been off course after being jammed.
