Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki said on Sunday, September 14, that her administration is focused on serving the public rather than holding on to power.

Speaking at a meeting in the newly established prime minister’s office in Kathmandu, Karki emphasized that her government will function for six months before transferring authority to an elected administration.

Karki assumed office following the dismissal of former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s government after nationwide anti-corruption demonstrations. The protests, which began earlier this month, turned violent and led to widespread damage across several cities.

The health ministry confirmed on Sunday that at least 72 people have died as a result of the unrest, with more victims recovered from damaged commercial buildings, including shopping centers.

Karki announced that her government would provide compensation to the families of those killed in the protests. She stressed that the interim administration’s priority is restoring stability and preparing the ground for elections.
