U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Thursday announced a new military initiative aimed at countering narco-terrorist activity across the Western Hemisphere. The mission, named Operation SOUTHERN SPEAR, will be led by Joint Task Force Southern Spear in coordination with the U.S. Southern Command.
According to Hegseth, the operation is designed to strengthen homeland security by disrupting groups involved in drug trafficking that pose a threat to the region. He said the effort focuses on removing narco-terrorists from the hemisphere and reducing the flow of drugs contributing to deaths across the United States.
SOUTHCOM, which oversees U.S. military operations across 31 countries in South America, Central America, and the Caribbean, will play a central role in supporting the mission. The command’s existing presence in the region positions it to coordinate operations, share intelligence, and work with partner nations as part of the broader initiative.
While further operational details were not released, the announcement signals an expanded focus on regional security and drug-related threats. U.S. officials are expected to provide updates as the mission progresses.
