A Paris court has found ten people guilty of cyber-bullying Brigitte Macron, the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron, over online abuse linked to her gender, sexuality and personal life. The defendants, eight men and two women, were convicted of making degrading and malicious remarks, including false claims and repeated insults focused on the age difference between the presidential couple.
Most of those convicted received suspended prison sentences of up to eight months, while one defendant was jailed immediately for failing to appear in court. The court also ordered the suspension of several social media accounts used to spread the abuse. The judge ruled that the defendants had acted with a clear intention to cause harm.
The case follows years of online conspiracy theories alleging that Brigitte Macron did not exist or had changed gender. Two figures previously linked to those claims had earlier convictions overturned on appeal, a decision now being challenged by the Macrons at France’s highest appeals court.
During the trial, Brigitte Macron’s daughter said the harassment had affected her mother’s health, daily life and family, including her grandchildren. The ruling comes ahead of a separate defamation case filed by the Macrons in the United States over similar allegations.
