Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday thanked European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for her birthday greetings and reiterated India’s commitment to strengthening relations with the European Union.
In a phone call with the European Commission chief, Modi welcomed the adoption of the New Strategic EU-India Agenda, describing it as an important step toward advancing the partnership. He also underlined India’s support for an early and peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.
“Always a pleasure to speak to President Ursula von der Leyen. Thank you for your warm birthday greetings. Delighted to know about the ‘New Strategic EU-India Agenda’ adopted today. India is ready to take the India-EU relationship to the next level. It is our shared commitment, shared goal, and shared responsibility,” Modi posted on X.
The European Commission and the High Representative jointly adopted the new strategy, which sets out areas for deeper cooperation, including trade, investment, defence industry ties, clean energy, and innovation. Von der Leyen said the EU aims to finalise a Free Trade Agreement with India by year-end, calling Europe “India’s biggest trading partner.”
