As Australia prepares to introduce a nationwide social media ban for users under 16 on December 10, cyber safety specialists are raising concerns about unexpected security risks. The new rules will require platforms to verify users’ ages, but experts warn that this process may open the door to convincing “prove-your-age” scams. These scams could push people to click harmful links or share personal details, increasing the risk of identity theft.

Platforms will be responsible for designing their own age-checking systems. They cannot rely solely on government ID, and none will ask users to submit only official identification to confirm their age. Some companies plan to use tools such as third-party verification partners, video-based checks, or systems linked to banking apps. Despite these safety measures, specialists believe scammers will imitate these methods to trick Australians through phishing texts and emails.

Cyber safety educators say these unintended consequences highlight the need for strong public awareness. While the rules aim to protect young people, they also create new opportunities for malicious actors to exploit confusion around verification.
