Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani said on Sunday, September 14, that Israel’s recent attack would derail ongoing efforts to reduce tensions in the region.
His remarks came during a preparatory session for the Arab-Islamic summit scheduled for Monday in Doha, where leaders are set to discuss Israel’s strike on Hamas figures in Qatar last week.
A draft resolution to be reviewed by summit participants condemns the attack as a destabilizing escalation and rejects what it describes as Israeli attempts to impose a new regional order. The draft, seen by Reuters, does not include specific diplomatic or economic measures against Israel but could be amended before the final session.
The strike, which Hamas said killed five members though not senior leadership, has drawn backing for Qatar from Arab and Islamic states. The incident has also heightened tensions in Gulf politics, particularly between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, which normalized ties in 2020.
The emergency summit brings together members of the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. Leaders are expected to emphasize solidarity with Qatar while addressing the implications of Israel’s actions.
