Russia and China accused the United States of intimidation and aggressive behavior toward Venezuela during an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday. The meeting was requested by Venezuela and supported by Moscow and Beijing amid rising tensions over U.S. actions in the region.

U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz defended Washington’s stance, stating that the United States would act to protect its hemisphere, borders, and citizens. He said the U.S. plans to impose and strictly enforce sanctions aimed at limiting the resources of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Washington accuses Maduro of using oil revenue to support Cartel de Los Soles and other illegal activities.

Waltz told the council that Venezuela’s oil sales allow Maduro to maintain power and fund what the U.S. describes as narco-terrorism. He added that the Venezuelan people deserve better governance.

On December 16, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a total blockade of sanctioned oil vessels traveling to and from Venezuela. This followed a large U.S. naval deployment in September described as an anti-narcotics operation. Since then, U.S. forces have carried out multiple strikes on boats alleged to be involved in drug trafficking, claims made without publicly released evidence.

More than 100 people have reportedly been killed, including fishermen. Maduro says the U.S. aims to remove him and control Venezuela’s oil, while Russia has pledged full support for Venezuela.
