Israeli airstrikes targeted two residential buildings in Gaza City on Sunday, September 14, after residents were ordered to evacuate, according to Palestinian officials.
The strikes are part of Israel’s intensified offensive on Gaza City, launched late last month with the stated goal of freeing hostages still held by Hamas. Israel has urged civilians to move to Mawasi, an area it designated a humanitarian zone.
Local officials said at least 30 residential buildings were destroyed and thousands displaced in the latest wave of attacks. The escalation coincided with the arrival of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Israel to discuss the trajectory of the conflict.
Gaza’s health authorities say more than 64,000 people have been killed since the war began nearly two years ago, following Hamas’s October 7, 2023 assault on Israel that left 1,200 dead and 251 taken hostage, according to Israeli figures.
