Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares will welcome delegations from the United States and China in Madrid on Sunday, September 14, ahead of discussions focused on trade disputes and the future of the social media platform TikTok, the government announced.

The meetings will also address U.S. calls for its G7 and European allies to impose tariffs on China in order to limit Beijing’s purchases of Russian oil.

This marks the fourth round of talks in four months between U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. The officials, joined by China’s top trade negotiator Li Chenggang, last met in Stockholm in July, where they agreed to extend a 90-day trade truce that eased retaliatory tariffs and reopened the flow of rare-earth minerals from China to the United States.

The talks will take place at the Palacio de Santa Cruz, the headquarters of Spain’s foreign ministry. While Madrid is seeking high visibility for the event, analysts caution that no major breakthroughs are expected.
