Strike on Sudan Hospital Kills 64, Including 13 Children, WHO Says

A strike on a hospital in Sudan’s Darfur region killed at least 64 people, including 13 children, and wounded 89 others last week, the World Health Organization said on Saturday.

The attack hit Al Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur on Friday and left the facility non-functional. WHO chief Tedros Ghebreyesus announced the toll on X and called on all parties to stop the violence.

“Enough blood has been spilled. Enough suffering has been inflicted. The time has come to de-escalate the conflict in Sudan,” Ghebreyesus said.

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces blamed the military for the strike. The army denied carrying out the attack but two military officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the strike targeted a nearby police station.

Sudan has been at war since April 2023, when a power struggle between the military and the RSF broke into open conflict across the country. The war has killed more than 40,000 people according to UN figures, though aid groups say the true number could be far higher.

The WHO said more than 2,000 people have died in attacks on medical facilities since the war began. International law prohibits attacks on hospitals and other protected sites during armed conflict.

The strike on Al Daein Teaching Hospital is among the deadliest single attacks on a medical facility since the conflict began nearly three years ago.
