US President Donald Trump on Thursday repeated his claim that Washington and Tehran are in active negotiations to end the ongoing conflict, while Iran flatly denied any talks exist.
Speaking at a Republican fundraiser, Trump went further, claiming Iran’s leadership had informally offered him the role of Supreme Leader — a claim no Iranian authority has confirmed.
“We’d like to make you the next supreme leader. No, thank you. I don’t want it,” Trump said, recounting the alleged exchange.
Iran rejected the remarks outright. Military spokesperson Ebrahim Zolfaqari responded: “Has the level of your inner struggle reached the stage of you negotiating with yourself? No one like us will make a deal with you. Not now. Not ever.”
Iranian state and military media have maintained that no direct or indirect contact with Washington has taken place.
Trump, however, insisted Iran wants a deal but cannot say so publicly out of fear — both of its own population and of US military action.
US media reports say Washington has sent Tehran a 15-point ceasefire proposal through intermediaries, including Pakistan. The proposal reportedly demands that Iran dismantle its nuclear programme, cut support for proxy groups, and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has rejected the proposal and submitted a counter-proposal of its own.
The conflict between US-Israeli forces and Iran has now run for nearly four weeks, with no clear path to a settlement in sight.
