China called for an immediate halt to military operations in the Middle East on April 2, 2026, after President Donald Trump threatened to bomb Iran into the “Stone Ages” and vowed to continue strikes for another two to three weeks.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told reporters at a news conference that military means cannot resolve the conflict at its core and that escalation does not serve the interests of either side. She urged all parties to immediately cease military operations and return to dialogue and negotiations.
China’s call came directly after Trump addressed the nation on the night of April 1, declaring that the US had nearly completed its core strategic objectives in Iran and warning that American forces would hit the country extremely hard in the weeks ahead. Trump also threatened to destroy Iran’s power plants, oil infrastructure, and desalination facilities if Tehran refused to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Beijing’s position places it firmly on the opposite side of Washington on the question of how to end the war. China holds significant influence over Iran as its largest trading partner and the biggest buyer of Iranian oil, giving its calls for a ceasefire more weight than those of other countries that have urged restraint.
Iran has continued to fire missiles at Israel and Gulf states even as diplomatic pressure from multiple directions mounts on both sides to find a path toward ending the conflict, now in its fifth week with no resolution in sight.
