Iran’s Supreme Leader Vows Continued Support for Hezbollah

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei praised Hezbollah and pledged continued support for the group in a message to its Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem on Wednesday.

Khamenei reaffirmed that Iran’s policy remains rooted in ongoing support for resistance movements against the US and Israel. He said the policy follows the path laid by his predecessor, the late Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, and Hezbollah’s former chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.

The message comes as Israeli strikes killed at least seven people in the Jnah area of Beirut on Wednesday, with the IDF claiming it eliminated Hezbollah’s Southern Front commander Youssef Ismail Hashem in the attack. Israel has carried out a series of strikes targeting senior Hezbollah figures across Lebanon as part of its broader campaign against Iran and its proxies.

Hezbollah joined Iran and Yemen’s Houthis in a coordinated ballistic missile attack on Israel earlier on Wednesday, marking the third such joint operation since the group entered the conflict.

Khamenei’s pledge signals that Tehran intends to maintain its support network across the region despite suffering significant losses, including the killing of dozens of senior officials and military commanders in US and Israeli strikes since the conflict began on February 28. The IDF killed Mahdi Vafaei, head of the Engineering Branch of the Quds Force’s Lebanon Corps, in Iran earlier the same day.

Israeli Raids Hit Beirut Suburbs as Footballer’s Combat Role Sparks Outrage

Israeli forces conducted multiple air raids on the southern suburbs of Beirut on Monday, striking residential and urban areas including the Sfeir neighborhood and surrounding districts, as military operations in Lebanon intensify alongside the broader regional conflict.

One documented strike hit the Ramlet al-Baida corniche in Beirut, where displaced civilians had sought refuge. Two successive strikes on the location killed at least eight people and wounded dozens more. Lebanese authorities reported that hundreds of displaced families were present at the site when the strikes occurred, with damage to buildings and civilian infrastructure across the area.

Israel has framed its operations in Lebanon as targeting Hezbollah positions and infrastructure linked to Iran-backed groups. The strikes form part of a pattern of escalation that has expanded alongside Israeli military action in Iran and Gaza.

Separately, an Israeli Premier League footballer has drawn international attention after footage emerged showing him participating in combat operations in southern Lebanon. Menashe Zalka, who plays for Hapoel Hadera, appeared in verified video wearing Israeli army uniform, opening fire with a machine gun and throwing a grenade alongside troops during operations in the region. Israeli media identified him as a reservist with the army’s paratrooper brigade.

The footage sparked outrage among football officials, fans and human rights groups, with calls for FIFA and other governing bodies to take action over his participation in combat. Critics argue that the visibility of a professional athlete in active military operations raises questions that football’s governing bodies cannot ignore. No official response from FIFA has been issued as of Monday.
