UK PM Defends NATO as Trump Considers US Withdrawal from Alliance

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer defended NATO on Wednesday, calling it “the single most effective military alliance the world has ever seen,” hours after US President Donald Trump said he was strongly considering pulling the United States out of the organisation.

Trump told the UK’s Telegraph newspaper that he had always known NATO was a “paper tiger,” Reuters reported. The remarks marked one of the sharpest public attacks by a sitting US president on the alliance.

Starmer pushed back directly, telling a press conference that NATO “has kept us safe for many decades, and we are fully committed to NATO.” In a separate address to the nation, the British Prime Minister said the UK would not be dragged into the Iran war, stating that in a volatile world, Britain’s long-term national interest required close partnership with European allies.

“This is not our war,” Starmer said.

The public divergence between Washington and London over NATO comes at a particularly sensitive moment, as the US conducts a major military campaign against Iran alongside Israel. Trump’s suggestion of a US exit from NATO raises questions about the future of collective Western defence at a time of simultaneous conflicts in the Middle East and ongoing tensions in Europe.

Several European leaders have in recent weeks pushed for greater defence independence from the United States amid uncertainty over Washington’s long-term security commitments to the continent.
