Taiwan Says It Sees Only Warships and Warplanes as China Talks Peace With Opposition

Taiwanese officials say they are observing a continued rise in Chinese military activity around the island, including warships and warplanes, even as Beijing promotes dialogue and “peace” messaging with Taiwan’s opposition leadership.

According to reports from Reuters, Taiwan’s defence ministry has tracked frequent deployments of Chinese naval and air forces near its territory in recent days. The activity includes aircraft entering Taiwan’s air defence identification zone (ADIZ) and regular naval patrols, reflecting what Taipei describes as sustained military pressure.

The developments come as China simultaneously engages in political outreach to Taiwan’s opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party. The party’s chair, Cheng Li-wun, has been in China on a visit framed by Beijing as promoting dialogue and cross-strait cooperation. Chinese officials have used the meetings to reiterate their position that Taiwan is part of China and to call for peaceful “reunification.”

Taiwanese officials, however, argue that the military posture contradicts the diplomatic messaging. Defence Minister Wellington Koo has warned lawmakers that China’s expanding military presence represents an increasing security threat, noting the growing frequency and scale of operations around the island.

The situation has also intensified domestic political debate in Taiwan, where the opposition has been accused by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of weakening defence readiness by delaying or stalling key military spending proposals.

Beijing, meanwhile, continues to reject official communication with Taiwan’s government, instead favouring engagement with opposition figures. It insists that its military activities are defensive and aimed at countering separatism, while Taiwan maintains that only its people can decide their future.

The combination of political outreach and sustained military activity underscores the complexity of cross-strait relations, where diplomatic messaging and security dynamics often move in opposite directions.
