A tanker anchored near the Emirati oil port of Fujairah was struck by an “unknown projectile” late Monday March 16, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) centre. The incident occurred in the Gulf of Oman, approximately 23 nautical miles east of Fujairah. Authorities reported that the vessel sustained minor structural damage, with no injuries to crew members and no environmental impact.

The location of the attack is strategically significant. Fujairah serves as a key oil export hub that allows shipments to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage that has effectively been closed since the outbreak of war with Iran. The port and the surrounding Fujairah Oil Industry Zone (FOIZ) have previously been targeted amid ongoing regional tensions.

Separately, Fujairah authorities confirmed that a fire broke out in the FOIZ on Tuesday March 17 following a reported drone strike. Emergency services are working to contain the blaze.

The tanker incident marks the 21st reported maritime security event in the Arabian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, and Gulf of Oman since the conflict began, based on earlier UKMTO data. The series of incidents highlights ongoing risks to commercial shipping in the region.
