A political storm has erupted in the United States after President Donald Trump accused six Democratic lawmakers of “seditious behaviour, punishable by death” following the release of a video encouraging service members to refuse unlawful commands. The lawmakers — all with military or intelligence backgrounds — said Trump’s remarks amounted to dangerous threats against elected officials, especially at a time of rising politically motivated violence.

The video, shared by Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin, featured Senator Mark Kelly and Representatives Chris DeLuzio, Maggie Goodlander, Chrissy Houlahan and Jason Crow. In it, they reminded military personnel that US law allows them to reject illegal orders. The lawmakers argued that current threats to the Constitution include actions from within the country.

Trump responded on social media with a series of posts calling for their arrest and trial, and even amplified a message advocating execution. The White House later denied that the president was calling for the death penalty, insisting the lawmakers encouraged defiance of lawful commands.

House leaders said they were coordinating with Capitol Police to ensure the safety of the lawmakers and their families. The incident comes amid heightened concern about political violence, with recent attacks and threats targeting public officials across party lines.
