US President Donald Trump congratulated Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on her coalition’s snap election victory, calling it a major political success and reaffirming support for the bilateral alliance.
Trump praised Takaichi’s decision to call early elections, describing her as a respected and popular leader whose strategy had delivered strong results. He said it was an honour to endorse her and wished her success in advancing a conservative agenda focused on peace through strength. Trump also claimed the scale of her victory was the largest seen in Japan since World War II, though no evidence was presented to support this assertion.
Takaichi thanked Trump for his public endorsement and reiterated that the Japan–US alliance remains strong and central to regional stability. She also confirmed plans to visit the White House later this year. Senior US officials echoed Trump’s remarks, stating that a stable and strong Japan plays an important role in maintaining balance in Asia.
The election outcome was also welcomed by several international leaders. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the result as a landmark victory and reaffirmed the importance of cooperation between India and Japan. Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni highlighted growing strategic trust between Tokyo and Rome.
Despite the decisive win, Takaichi faces significant challenges at home. Inflation and stagnant wages remain key concerns, and critics have raised warnings over rising public debt following proposed economic stimulus measures. Her firm foreign policy stance, particularly comments related to regional security and Taiwan, has also contributed to tensions with China.
